Lots and lots of ice

When visiting Hallstatt, don’t forget about Obertraun! Really, don’t!

Obertraun is located near the Hallstatt Lake, just one train stop (around 3min) away from Hallstatt or for people who love long walks – an hour walk between the villages. Possible to rent bicycles near the Obertraun-Dachsteinhöhlen train station. Lots of options! Personally, I walked almost everywhere and enjoyed every single minute!

Me – a solo traveler, who gets lost super easy, I was a bit worried about getting lost and when got to Obertraun, my worries disappear – yay! just few roads to walk! Have to mention – beautiful roads!

Obertraun has a lot to offer – skiing, snowboarding, swimming, caves – depends on season. My stay in Obertraun was peaceful, without extreme activities. Main reason why I visited Obertraun was Dachstein Ice cave. It really is a mystical place! My first ice cave and for sure not the last one. Wonderful world of ice and rock. Tour lasts around 50min and is accompanied by experienced guide. Before entering the cave, I imagined myself to turn into an icicle and for a surprise it was not as cold as I thought it is going to be. Temperature was around 4 °C, warmer jacket is needed, but nothing extreme. There is another cave called Mammoth Cave, but I skipped this.

The next object was Five Fingers – viewing platform (hand-like shape) high in Alps, elevation 2,108 m. Views to Hallstatt and Obertraun – breathtaking and very peaceful. I did hope to spend a bit more time on top of the mountain, but unfortunately my body is too sensitive and altitude sickness took over. Not a clever move to rush up on top of the mountain like crazy and I’m blaming curiosity and excitement! The good thing – still took some photos!

How to get to caves and Five Fingers, like mentioned before – I walked almost everywhere, but there are busses going from Hallstatt, Obertraun to Five Fingers and caves. Click for more detailed information about prices and attractions.

Stay in Obertraun was beautiful, peaceful. Not even a tiny bit of rush I’m used to living in a big city. Spent 2 nights in a small treehouse – romantic time on my own. Treehouse was beautiful, located in a park with some other caravans, next to the lake. For me it felt like a dreamlike! Well, the whole trip to Hallstatt and Obertraun was a different reality for me – picture perfect nature, cute houses!

The last bit, some photos of Obertraun:
