iceland travel europe

Many people think of Iceland as very cold and ice covered country. It’s actually very green. Very green. Yes, Iceland have beautiful glaciers and glacier lagoon called Jökulsárlón, but because of endless lava fields and moss growing on them – Iceland is very green. Greenland is way more icy than Iceland and apparently, vikings to confuse other vikings swapped the names. Well, even in our days, there are people who still think Iceland is all covered in ice.

During the winter months traveling around Iceland can be a bit complicated for non driving person as I am. Public transport from town to town is pretty much non existing. Didn’t have much choice and booked guided tours. Glad I did. Definitely not for budget travellers. Was worth every krona. I had booked tours from 4 different companies and all guides were professional, knowledgeable and have to say, Icelandic people have a good sense of humour and everyone on my tours had a good laugh.

The most unforgettable time I had on a glacier, doing a bit of ice climbing and few hours hiking on a glacier. Crampons is a must on a glacier, otherwise you are in for a funny walk! Like I said, crampons is a must, just for your own safety. Seen some brave-hearted people trying to walk on a glacier with normal shoes and luckily, they didn’t get far and came back shortly.

And now a lot of photos to follow:

Very snowy day for hiking…

Jökulsárlón iceland

The ice paradise. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon was one of the reasons why I wanted to visit Iceland. Was impressed. Massive chunks of ice and seals swimming around.

Some refreshing ice on the beach after all that sun! Just kidding! Not that much sun but beautiful for sure!

Black sand beach in Vík. A lot of snow this day and the beach looked apocalyptic but beautiful for sure!

Vík, black sand beach.

And the snow I was talking about…

Was very lucky to see 7 whales! Seems like they enjoyed the sun in Reykjavik!

The weather in Iceland is ever changing and some days were sunny too 🙂

geysir iceland

Can’t believe forgot to post this on my previous post! Anyway, better late than never! This is one very active gysir. And yep, one of the top attractions in Iceland.

iceland hostel galaxy pod

My very first hostel experience and have to say Galaxy Pod is one of the coolest places I have ever stayed! But was told by other travellers – do not imagine all hostels are like this, this is exceptional.

Unfortunately, didn’t have a chance to visit volcano caves and ice caves so I’m planning my trip back and would like to learn more ice climbing in autumn. If anyone wonder about Northern Lights – wasn’t able to capture them as my camera is not good enough. First night when seen them was not impressed at all, there was something going on but nothing like I have seen on photos or videos. But the night I stayed on a farm hotel in the middle of nowhere, the lights were not shy at all, intense green and dancing around for couple of hours! That was magical.
