It has been a year since my last trip to Austria and this time decided to wander off city streets and put on the hiking boots and off to the mountains and into the woods I went. Hiking boots are now officially the best footwear I had ever put on and city streets are no longer my holiday destination, my heart belong to nature and city streets have become hiking trails where it’s just me, animals and sometimes another human being to smile and say hello. All those years I lived in Latvia, never really spent quality time in Rīga, every single time I had a chance to be there, had to rush from one point to another. As I chosen to fly to Moscow from Rīga, not from London, decided I should have a small break in Rīga too and oh, how beautiful Rīga Old Town is!!! Continue reading
Despite many negative comments I received from others regarding Russia, I blocked them all out and visited my friend in Moscow. It was a nice catch up after 7 years of not seeing each other. Have to say I didn’t get robbed, stopped by police or put in prison and the drivers in Moscow are not that extreme either as I was told, some do misbehave and have to keep in mind it’s a big city, with over 15million people living there and there is always someone willing to break the rules, just like in any other place. To all who wonder – Moscow is safe 😉 As I have never been to other parts of Russia, situation could be different there. Continue reading
Escape to land which looks like a fairytale now is over, one week is too short. Switzerland is more than beautiful, at least villages and small towns are unrealistic cute! Not sure about bigger towns and cities as I did not stay there. Ohhh, I’m totally in love with nature and those small cute houses decorated with colourful flowers! Sometimes I caught myself thinking – maybe I’m asleep in my bed and just dreaming, some places seemed to be too pretty to be real and it was hard for me to understand if I’m really walking on this magical land! And back again! Pretty sure not the last time this year, ice climbing is addictive and their indoor ice climbing gym/centre in Kinlochleven is really good. Somehow I got a feeling Scotland will become my second home and impatiently I’m waiting for winter to put my skills into test outdoors.
As I was able to stay in Scotland for only 2 nights, decided to stay in Glencoe just 13km from Kinlochleven. Such a beautiful, scenic village! So many hiking trails to walk from few hours to couple of days. A hikers and photographers paradise for sure! Continue reading
Scotland was not on my destination list this year or in a nearest future. Kind of knew nature is beautiful there but somehow Scotland never got my attention until now. After trying out ice climbing in Iceland some things have changed in my life and climbing both rock and ice is part of my life now. Not brave enough yet to discover the great outdoors but I’ll get there and at the moment I’m working on my climbing skills and strength indoors. It came as a surprise (shock) when my rock climbing instructor told me there is indoor ice climbing wall in London (Covent Garden) and Scotland in a small village called Kinlochleven. The London ice wall is good too but I prefer the one in Scotland, apparently it’s the biggest one in the world. So, from now on Scotland will be a very visited place. Actually, 4 weeks and I’m back again 🙂 Continue reading
Latvia, a country not that many people have heard about. Nope, not part of Russia and Lithuania and Latvia are two separate countries. We are neighbours with Lithuania and we do share some similarities in culture and language but we are not one country. Why did I mention this? Because I have to answer those questions over and over again…
After 2 and half years I made my trip back to my motherland – yes, I know that’s a long time… Always thought it was a boring land with nothing to see. Completely flat, forests being cut down and even the sea seemed too calm! This time I looked at my flat land with tourist eyes and thought to myself how blind I was!
This post is devoted to the beautiful and different Baltic shores in Latvia. Continue reading
Many people think of Iceland as very cold and ice covered country. It’s actually very green. Very green. Yes, Iceland have beautiful glaciers and glacier lagoon called Jökulsárlón, but because of endless lava fields and moss growing on them – Iceland is very green. Greenland is way more icy than Iceland and apparently, vikings to confuse other vikings swapped the names. Well, even in our days, there are people who still think Iceland is all covered in ice. The long waited trip to Iceland now is over. Left the country with tears in my eyes and now I’m planing my way back. Why with tears in my eyes? Fell in love with the country, everything seemed so perfect, even the smell of sulfur.
On the way from the airport to Reykjavik, couldn’t stop staring outside the window and all I could think was – Iceland does not look like earth, more like a moon or other planet, definitely not earth. Nature is in charge, especially volcanos, endless moss covered lava fields and no trees to be seen for hours while driving. Continue reading
